Modernized Butuan National Museum

Repository of the national treasures hidden for countless years! Priceless archaeological finds dug-up after a thousand years hiding below the earth surface. The discovery of different artifacts some dated 400 AD making Butuan as the center of trade and commerce in the Philippines in the Southeast Asia’s neighboring countries before the Spanish colonizers came to the Philippines.

Butuan National Museum is located in barangay Doongan, Butuan City, the capital of Caraga Region. It was established after the accidental discovery of archaeological materials by the City Engineering Office of Butuan City in 1974 while draining the water confined inside a man-made river system. Succeeding excavations conducted by the National Museum, yielded tremendous archaeological finds of collectors value. The most significant find were the prehistoric Balanghai or Butuan boats that date from 4th to 13th centuries A.D., just five kilometers from the city proper. The National Museum conducted a scientific research, sending its archaeologists and researchers at Ambangan, Libertad.

The now improve Butuan National Museum can compete world class haven when visited by many tourists either local or foreign visitors. The discovery of the 9 Butuan boats or known as balanghai boats, with about 50 thousands archaeological relics and cultural materials (numerous porcelain jars, pots, plates, golds, etc.) excavated in Libertad, became the best evidence to prove that Butuan established trading relations in Asian countries, and even reaching beyond uncharted seas around the globe. These some pieces of history are now house in Butuan National Museum.

The establishment of the museum was facilitated through the support of the Butuan Museum Foundation, Inc., which was organized to assist the National Museum safeguard and preserve the rich cultural heritage of the region.

How to get there: From Butuan City proper by tricycle or Multicab en route to barangay Doongan where Butuan National Museum is located.

Distance: It will take for estimated 15 minutes by tricycle or multicab to reach the museum since it is accessible by any means of transportation as its perfect location is in the heart of the City.

Britania Islands is a home of twenty-four islands and islets surrounded by turquoise waters coming from the Pacific. It’s the best-kept secret of Surigao del Sur in the municipality of San Agustin. This is where many divers are tempted to splash underwater to feel its coolness and refreshing blows to your body. It is not just how you feel its waters but the beauty of the world under the sea.

Marine life inside Britania Islands harboring the essence of tropical paradise where you can find Nemo and his friends in a coral world. Its pristine white sand beaches will compare to Boracay in its finest form. Most of the islands are no man’s land with less vegetation. Bigger islands are rocky formation along the shoreline, one distinct feature where one of the islands such as Boslon has a giant rock leaning on its side of the island while exploring the space under it. Most of the islands are uninhabited with minimal or no vegetation. But all have one thing in common: they are surrounded by crystal clear waters. The Geographic Channel featured it as one of the best spots in Asia.

How to get there: Public Utility Bus or van from Butuan City to San Agustin town, then dropped you along the highway of barangay Salvacion as entry point, then hire habal-habal or single tricycle driver to carry you to the Britania port, then rent a boat for island hopping in Britania Group of Islands and islets.

Distance: Estimated 3 hours of travel from Butuan City to San Agustin, then dropped you along the highway of barangay Salvacion to hire habal-habal for a ride for estimated 5 minutes to the port, then rent a boat for island hopping to Britania Group of Islands and islets.

Irresistible Guyam Island, General Luna, Siargao

A gem in the Pacific waving with its pristine waters and white sand beach before your eyes!

Guyam Island is the closest among the other islands near the shoreline of General Luna, Siargao Island. You can appreciate its gift with its white sands beach forming a white line in your naked eye with coconut trees filled the island. This cute island became the center of attraction as you stand in the shoreline of General Luna. One drifter has to say that during low tide a group of professional divers challenges to cross the sea by walking and land on the white island. The island is surrounded by its pristine waters anyone will entice to swim the whole day.

While there, you can give sights to other gems waving near where you stand, and experience the same feeling jumping to other beautiful spots. I am referring to other neighboring treasures that you want to embark are Daku Island, Naked Island, and Corregidor Island.

How to get there: From Butuan City by bus or van to Surigao City, then RORO or Pumpboat for crossing the sea to the port of Dapa, then from Dapa taking a ride by jeepney or private vehicle to General Luna, hire a boat to cross Guyam Island.

Distance: It will take for estimated 2 to 3 hours from Butuan City to Surigao City using public utility bus or private vehicle, then from Surigao City seaport crossing the sea by RORO for about 3 to 4 hours or pump boat for 2 to 3 hours in reaching the port of Dapa. While in Dapa, hiring a jeepney or private vehicle for at least half an hour going to General Luna, then hire a pump boat to cross the very near Guyam Island.

Bega Falls of Mabuhay, Propsperidad, is another majestic falls discovered in Caraga Region aside from the other majestic falls located in Bislig City, the Tinuy-an Falls. The name has the magical power to drop men in her beauty. The fairy tale story involves a beautiful fairy attracted by many men, once they go with her they went all the way to the falls and will not come back. The word ‘bega’ means in english to flirt.

Bega Falls is a 4-tiered waterfall located in Purok 5, a 5.2 km from Brgy. Mabuhay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur. Although, the location of the falls is far from the main hub of the town proper, and you are going through hard directions before reaching the majestic falls. But once you reach there, you are seduced by its beauty and feeling of tiredness and exhaustion started to fade away.

Bega Falls has been a tourist attraction for locals but has never been publicly exposed to other tourists in the Philippines. The place is home to at least 8 small springs and 25 waterfalls, where only a few are accessible to visitors for now.

Location: Mabuhay, Prosperidad, Agusan del Sur, Caraga Region

How to get there: From Butuan City by bus or van and dropped you at Awa along the highway entry point for Los Arcos, you can hire habal-habal/single motorcycle driver to carry you to barangay Mabuhay, then register at the barangay hall for you to be led by a tour guide, then ride habal-habal to the entry point, from that entry point walking/hiking to the 4 tiers of Bega Falls.

Distance: It will take for estimated 1 and a half to 2 hours from Butuan City to Awa along the highway entry point to Los Arcos. Then, hire habal-habal/single motorcycle in going to barangay hall of Mabuhay. From the barangay hall of Mabuhay, you will be led by a tour guide for another run of habal-habal for 10 to 15 minutes (4 kilometers) to the entry point of Bega Falls, from that entry point you will have to hike or walk for 30 minutes (1.2 kilometers) in reaching the 1st tier of Bega Falls and soon to another tier and so forth.

The turquoise water in the Kabakongan Cove is we are all searching for, splashing beneath the white sand beach and surrender yourself as you take the challenge in embracing the cold and clear waters of the cove. Not just mentioning the colourful marine life and corals that composed the beautiful world underwater.

You are going deep into the womb of Mother Nature as what they say.

Delta Discovery Park located at Bonbon, Butuan City touted as the longest zipline in Asia, the ride is 1.3km long and takes 1 minute 45 seconds. Because of its distance, you won’t have that feeling of accelerating through the air. Halfway through the zip line, it’ll slow down to the speed of a cable car, letting you take in the views from the mountains to the city’s skyline.

But the fun does not end there as it offers other activities such ATV ride, buggy ride, and horseback riding.

Location: Butuan City, capital of Caraga Region

How to get there: From Butuan City proper by van or bicycle en route to barangay Bonbon, and from there, take a walk as part of the adventure to the different mountains before reaching the highest peak, the Mt. Mayapay.

Distance: It will take for estimated 15 minutes by tricycle or bicycle to drop you in barangay Bonbon, then estimated 4 to 6 hours of walking from the drop point in going to Mt. Mayapay.

Lake Bababu is located in the Bababu Island, Basilisa town of Dinagat Island province. The lake is amazing clear water with freshwater dominating above the level of water while below is salty. It has an underwater cave that connects the lake to the sea. Some professionals divers were able to navigate this enchanting channel from the lake to the sea.

Going to Laka Bababu will take half an hour through trekking into the jungle. You will experience a steep, uneven, rocky mountains but at the end, the reward is immeasurable as seeing the beautiful view of the lake, refreshing winds surrounded with thick vegetation of lush forest, while swimming the pure and clear water.

Siargao became the surfing capital of the Philippines because of Cloud 9 at General Luna. But it is not just Cloud 9, other parts of Siargao has different breaks, and started to gain fame from international surfers. Be prepared when you go for the action.

If you are beginner choose the area that is suit for you, or else go to Tuason Left.

Nevertheless, if you are skilled have some more fun and adventures jump to Barangay Pacifico.

For unisex adventures and good for beginners when small go to Jacking Horse.

Stimpies is a good for a left-hander, perfect tropical surf.

Rock Island is best for the right-hander with so much fun.

Dako waves also started gaining ground for neophytes.

There are other breaks that need to be discovered. Go for it!

Libjo is a hub of Mother Nature endowed with the beautiful white sand beaches to rock island formations. This islands and rocky islets floating along the ocean in a turquoise water are such a common sights to behold, particularly in Osmeña, Libjo, Dinagat Islands. It is just another 100 hundred islands in Pangasinan, but this one blessed with scenic and panoramic attractions like the reef surrounding the islands, white sands, and turquoise water from the Pacific Ocean.

Siargao, not just the hub of marine life, but the tourist destinations as well. Cloud 9 is the best surfing destinations in the country, Philippines. But ther are lots of surfing sites in the islands. Other beautiful destinations such as beautiful white sand beaches, islands hopping, mountain trekking, caving, and swimming the waterfalls. But the islands dominates beautiful white sand beaches which you can see them along its coastlines.

Siargao is also the home to international anglers for being the host every year to International Game Fishing Tournament in Magpupungko, Pilar considered as the game fishing capital in the country.

Habal-Habal Another Caraganon Innovation

The vehicle has been transformed from original composition to Caraganon innovation, and they are calling them “habal-habal” by the locals. Many of them running in the province or remote area to carry individuals who are living in the far-flung barangays. But mind you, this vehicle has of great help in the tourism industry and economic activity of the region as well.

There are lots of them having different style and composition without knowing the danger may pose to passengers. But still creativity and innovation of style produce good benefits to the end-users, with careful and discipline drivers are the most important part when travelling around Caraga Region.
